"An African by Nation, Now of Groton":
The African-American Experience in Groton Before 1800.
Andy German will talk about the rich, unwritten history of Africans participating in the development and daily life of colonial Groton, a land not of their choosing. Drawing from period sources, the presentation looks at their presence in the context of New England’s role in the Atlantic sugar trade and will offer details of the slave experience in Groton, and early efforts to live free there. German has written on historical topics and published several books. He also recently provided text for the Thames River Heritage Park's izi.travelapps.
Note: Our presentations are held at the Groton Congregational Church, 162 Monument Street in Groton.
